Frequently Asked Questions
What does this test look for?
This test is a quantitative Faecal Immunoglobin Test (qFIT). The qFIT test is the only test recommended in the UK by NICE for first-line screening for Bowel Cancer. It specifically detects and measures occult human haemoglobin in stools. The test can detect the tiniest amount of blood in stools from 1.8 ug/g
Is this test recognised in the UK?
Yes, this test is recognised by UK health clinicians. Our tests are analysed in a UK lab that is fully accredited with UKAS. The methodology is the same used by the NHS
What are the signs of Bowel Cancer?
The main symptoms of bowel cancer include: Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo, A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habits, Unexplained weight loss, Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason, A pain or lump in your tummy. You can read more about the symptoms of bowel cancer at Bowel Cancer UK
What is a Positive result?
The UK Government (NICE) guidelines state that any FIT test result below 10ug/g is negative and anything above 10ug/g is considered positive and will require further investigation. This does not mean a positive diagnosis of bowel cancer, as this test can not be used to diagnose, only as a highly accurate first-line screening test for bowel cancer. In comparison, the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme has a higher cut-off value for recording a positive or abnormal result, using the asymptomatic value of 120ug/g
What if my results are positive/abnormal?
We currently use the symptomatic value of 10ug/g to record any abnormal value as recommended by NICE. One of our pharmacists will contact you directly to discuss your results and support you in getting a referral to your GP. We can also help with referral to a private specialist.
