Acid reflux happens when stomach acid flows back up into your oesophagus (food pipe), causing a burning sensation in your chest—heartburn. It’s common and usually harmless, but frequent acid reflux can develop into GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), which requires treatment.

Acid reflux is occasional heartburn—it happens to most people sometimes. GERD is when acid reflux happens regularly (2+ times weekly). Occasional reflux is normal; frequent reflux needs treatment to prevent damage to your oesophagus.

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind your breastbone, often spreading up toward your throat. It’s not related to your heart—it’s caused by stomach acid irritating your oesophagus. It can feel like indigestion or discomfort in your chest.

Common mild side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Rash

Serious side effects are rare but include vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use), increased infection risk, and bone fractures (very rare with long-term use).

  • Antacids – Neutralises stomach acid (quick relief, short-lasting)
  • H2 Blockers – Reduce acid production (longer relief)
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) – Strongly reduce acid (most effective)
