FAQs
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It’s one of the most common STIs in the UK, affecting thousands annually.
What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
Many people with chlamydia have no symptoms at all—you can be infected and unaware. However, common symptoms include unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, pain during urination, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse. Symptoms can appear 1-3 weeks after infection but sometimes take longer or never appear.
Can Chlamydia cause complications?
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications including pelvic inflammatory disease (women), infertility, and chronic pain.
How is Chlamydia spread?
Chlamydia spreads through unprotected sexual contact—vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. It cannot spread through kissing, sharing drinks, or casual contact.
How do i take the medication?
How to Take Doxycycline
Take 1 capsule (100mg) twice daily for 7 days. Swallow it whole with a big glass of water. Take it with food. Space doses 12 hours apart (morning and night). Don’t skip doses—finish all 7 days.
What Not to Mix
Don’t take indigestion tablets, iron pills, or zinc supplements within 2 hours of Doxycycline. They stop your body absorbing the antibiotic properly. If you need these, take them at different times of day.
Sun Safety
Your skin will be sensitive to sunlight while taking this medication. Wear sunscreen daily, cover up in sun, and avoid sunbeds—even cloudy days count. You could get a painful rash without protection.
Are there any side effects to Doxycycline?
Common mild side effects:
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Photosensitivity (sun sensitivity with doxycycline)
How soon after taking the treatment can I have sex?
You should wait until you have completed the full 7 day treatment course and you no longer have any symptoms.
Any sexual partners should also complete the same course of antibiotics before resuming any sexual activity to prevent re-infection.
