Fast, targeted relief from IBS cramps and pain. Mebeverine relaxes the muscles of the bowel to calm spasms, bloating and discomfort — without causing drowsiness.
Mebeverine is an antispasmodic medicine used to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including stomach cramps, pain, bloating and changes in bowel habit. It works by relaxing the muscles in the wall of the gut, calming the painful spasms that cause IBS discomfort. Because it acts directly on the bowel with very little absorbed into the rest of the body, it relieves symptoms without sedative or anticholinergic effects.
The usual dose is one 135mg tablet taken three times a day, swallowed whole with water. Take each tablet around 20 minutes before a meal — this helps prevent the cramps and spasms that eating can trigger. Once your symptoms improve, the dose can often be gradually reduced. Do not exceed the stated dose. If you forget a tablet, simply take the next dose as normal before your next meal — do not double up.
Mebeverine is generally very well tolerated and side effects are uncommon. As with any medicine, some people may experience a reaction, which can include skin rash, itching or hives. Allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention — stop taking the tablets and seek urgent help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any other unexpected effects, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
Warnings and precautions
Do not take Mebeverine if you are allergic to mebeverine hydrochloride or any of the tablet’s ingredients. Tell our pharmacist if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, as Mebeverine is not usually recommended. Seek medical advice before use if you are over 40 and your IBS symptoms are new, if you have noticed blood in your stools, unintentional weight loss, persistent fever, or a significant change in your usual symptoms — these need checking by a doctor before treating as IBS.
