Tamsulosin is the most popular treatment to treat symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate

If you are suffering from urinary symptoms it may be due to an enlarged prostate. The cause is not known but it is generally not serious to health and can be treated effectively with medication

Tamsulosin is indicated for the treatment of symptoms that occur with an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). It is estimated that one in four men over the age of 40 years will experience symptoms of BPH. Tamsulosin belongs to a group of medicines known as alpha-blockers and it works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate gland and urethra in turn increasing urination flow and alleviating symptoms.

What are the symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate?

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate include:

finding it difficult to start peeing
straining to pee
having a weak flow of urine
“stop-start” peeing
needing to pee urgently and/or frequently
needing to get up frequently in the night to pee
accidentally leaking urine (urinary incontinence)

One capsule should be taken after the same meal each day and swallowed whole. If it’s the first time you are taking this medicine, we normally advise you to take it in the evening at least on a temporary basis, and to take it easy if you are getting up during the night (for example sit at the side of the bed and take 5 breathes before getting up – the premise for this to reduce postural hypotension side effects)

If you experience any dizziness or weakness, you should sit or lie down until symptoms have gone

The most common side effects are dizziness and sexual dysfunction. Counsel patients who experience common side effects and refer in all cases of vomiting, skin reactions including angioedema, palpitations, and vision disorders, loss of consciousness and symptoms of Stevens – Johnson syndrome
