FAQs

An enlarged prosatet also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate naturally grows with age in many men. As it enlarges, it can squeeze the urethra (the tube that carries urine), restricting urine flow and causing bothersome urinary symptoms. BPH is very common in older men but is not cancer and doesn’t lead to cancer.

Common enlarged prostate symptoms include:

  • Weak or slow urinary stream
  • Frequent urination (especially at night—nocturia)
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Difficulty starting to urinate or stopping mid-stream
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Straining to urinate
  • Post-void dribbling

Symptoms vary widely; some men have mild symptoms, others more severe

No. An enlarged prostate / BPH is benign (non-cancerous) enlargement of the prostate. It’s not caused by cancer and doesn’t lead to cancer, though BPH and prostate cancer can coexist. BPH is purely an age-related enlargement that affects urinary function.

Yes. Generic medications contain the same active ingredients as brand-name versions and must meet the same rigourous UK medical standards for safety and effectiveness. They typically cost significantly less.

Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker medication that treats BPH symptoms. It’s sold under the brand name Flomax in the UK. Tamsulosin relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, allowing urine to flow more freely. It’s one of the most commonly prescribed and well-tolerated BPH treatments.

Tamsulosin targets alpha-1A receptors in the prostate and bladder neck muscles. By blocking these receptors, the muscles relax, widening the urethra and improving urine flow. This relieves urinary symptoms without shrinking the prostate or affecting PSA levels significantly.

Side effects are generally mild and uncommon:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (~10%, usually temporary)
  • Retrograde ejaculation (~8% – semen enters bladder instead of exiting; harmless but affects fertility)
  • Headache (~5%)
  • Fatigue (~3%)
  • Runny nose or nasal congestion (~3%)
